Orchids are magnificent, exotic plants but they carry a bad rap of being finicky plants that can put off many beginner gardeners. They are also generally quite expensive although some local Kenyan ones are not very expensive and are readily available at the roadside plant sellers.

Orchidaceae, which is the orchid family is a diverse family comprising a variety of plants which produce colourful and fragrant flowers. Did you know the Vanilla plant belongs to this family too?

Orchids thrive in tropical (warm, humid) conditions, sheltered from the sun by the thick canopy of the trees. This makes them ideal houseplants because you can mimic these conditions.

Choosing the right orchid and following the correct growing guidelines can set you on an enjoyable orchid plant parenting journey. Here are 5 tips for growing orchids for beginners:-

1) Select a beginner species

Orchids can be finicky, some varieties more than others.

Phalaenopsis orchids aka Moth Orchid are a good choice. They are fairly easy to grow and have the long-lasting gorgeous flowers making them a perfect choice for the living or dining room area.

Cymbidium, commonly referred to as Boat Orchid is another great option. It is cold-tolerant and easy to care for which makes it a common choice among amateur gardeners.

2) Light

Light requirements for orchids vary depending on the type. The Moth Orchid and Cymbidium will both thrive in a home environment when placed in a spot where they will receive morning sun and afternoon shade.

3) Water

Over-watering is one of the leading causes of death for houseplants and this includes orchids. The rule of thumb is to water when the potting soil is dry to the touch. Let the water drain completely.

4) Temperature and Humidity

Remember orchids are tropical plants which thrive in humid conditions. Moth orchids are more tolerant of normal room temperatures.

5) Keep Calm

Orchids are fun plants to have. Don’t stress or fuss over them too much. Just be observant and if you notice something you are not sure of how to handle, it is best to ask Dr. Google and compare widely. Don’t just the advise of one website (not even this one). Read and Read some more.  You are very likely to learn a lot from fellow gardeners including tips and tricks, and good and bad experiences.

But please. Do not give your orchids ice cubes fam, they don’t feel that vibe.
